Underwater Turbine Idea Wins Motivate Michigan Contest

The Motivate Michigan Initiative is a unique competition designed to foster innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “Through this initiative we may well discover ideas that can be used in our effort to transform Michigan’s economy and create jobs so we encourage as many people as possible to participate.”

The objective of “Motivate Michigan” is to initiate creative ideas to improve the economy of Michigan. Incoming freshmen and students enrolled in Michigan’s colleges and universities competed for scholarships and internships provided by sponsoring companies and organizations. Teams and individual students will submit ideas online to improve the Michigan economy. The ideas were judged on creativity, originality, practicality, and the potential economic impact to the state of Michigan. The winning idea will be developed into a project plan and presented to the logical “Project Owner” for funding and support.

The inaugural Motivate Michigan competition soliciting college student ideas for sparking Michigan’s economy and retaining more graduates draw more than 300 entries. The public statewide voted on the proposals April 12 to 30, with the judges, including MEDC Executive V.P. Lisa Dancsok, narrowing down the field to five. The winning team of Tarun Koshy and Nicholas Williams will split a $20,000 scholarship. Here’s a link to their concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLFiaRWFUs4
